THINGS TO DO IN PUGLIA

We are located in the stunning Itria Valley, Puglia, surrounded by beautiful countryside, olive trees,  vineyards and home of the Trulli (round stone-built houses with cone-shaped roofs). If you fancy taking a break from lazing around by the pool or relaxing in the peaceful setting of our retreat centre, there are lots of great things to do in the nearby area. We have included some of our favourites below.

"Puglia is the most beautiful region in the world"

- National Geographic 2016

Old Historical Towns

The main towns of the Itria Valley are Cisternino, Martina Franca, Alberobello (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Ostuni & Locorotondo.

These charming and beautiful old towns have remained virtually intact for centuries.

Cisternino is less than a ten minute drive from our centre and was recently voted one of the most beautiful small towns in Italy. Among the narrow winding streets are some amazing restaurants, chocolate shops and gelaterias (including vegan gelatos!)

The city of Lecce with it’s Baroque style buildings, cafés, bars and restaurants is a wonderful place to wander around.

Visiting the local street markets is a great way to get a taste of traditional life in Puglia. There are weekly markets nearby in Cisternino, Ostuni and Martina Franca selling local produce, seasonal vegetables, fruit, cheese, clothing, plants and various other bits and pieces.

Country Walks

There are some lovely walks in the surrounding area amongst the olive and almond groves. Less than 15 minutes walk away is the small village of Casalini with a superb pizzeria, bakery & bar/cafe. A great place to get a feel for the local community going about their daily lives.

Beaches

The long mediterranean coastline of Puglia is home to some of the best beaches in Italy.  Some of our favourite places to visit include;

  • Polignano a Mare  is a  beautiful old town on the coast with a popular beach set in a cove

  • Monopoli is another lovely  old historical town on the coast  just south of Polignano a Mare

  • Torre Canne is a local  beach side resort with sandy beaches, cafes and restaurants

  • Lido Ottagono is a beach club in Savelletri,  set on the rocky coast with crystal clear water for swimming

Best beaches

A wonderful experience is to visit a local olive grove, walk amongst the ancient olive orchards, learn about the history of olive oil farming and taste the olive oil.
